Project Description

In this longitudinal study, your role would involve collecting and analyzing data on how influences (student backgrounds, identity, learning experiences, etc.) shape global engineering (GE) students' career and social justice aspirations. In particular, we are using critical race theory (CRT) and social cognitive career theory (SCCT) to look into how calls to decolonize development and understand structural injustices affect student and practitioner career aspirations. A significant role of this position will involve running and posting prompts on a discord page of GE graduate students. On this discord page, graduate students in the study will be asked to reflect on their career goals, learning experiences, social justice movements, and personal values. Further, the apprentice will be asked to aid in transcribing semesterly interviews with those same students and coding transcriptions to SCCT themes such as career goals (e.g project manager with an NGO), and CRT themes such as resistance (e.g. standing up to someone speaking problematically about development). We encourage students from underrepresented backgrounds in engineering to apply. Extensive experience is not required.
