Cost sharing means that CU ÐßÐßÊÓƵ is providing money, employee effort, or tangible goods toward the direct costs of a sponsored research project. Such contributions may be made by CU ÐßÐßÊÓƵ, the principal investigator (PI), or by other third parties, but all are a form of cost share.ÌýAccording to CU ÐßÐßÊÓƵ's Cost Sharing Policy, cost sharing is generally prohibited unless it is specifically mandated by the sponsor or program guidelines and/or in the best interests of CU ÐßÐßÊÓƵ.

When CU commits cost share at the proposal stage, even if the sponsor does not track the commitment, CU is obligated to commit and track the proposed level of cost share. All cost-sharing commitments become binding obligations and part of the project’s scope of work when identified in a proposal and approved in advance by each unit contributing to the cost-sharing, i.e., cash, effort, or in-kind support. Review the Campus Controller’s Office webpage for further information and requirements.

  • Cost Share at Setup: The Cost Share Addendum, the signed CU cost share form (CSF), should be filled out with the speedtype(s) that will be used to fund the cash portion of the cost share. Without this information CCO is unable to create the cost share speedtype(s) which delays setup.Ìý
  • Change to Cost Share Amount: For mandatory and voluntary committed cost share, any changes to the committed amount must be communicated with the sponsor. The sponsor may choose to adjust their funding thus reach out to OCG if this occurs.
  • Effort: University-paid salary expenses and fringe benefits committed as cost sharing are recorded on the cost share SpeedType in the Finance System.Ìý
  • In-Kind: Represent non-cash support thus not usable for actual expenses that are occurring at the university. In-kind contributions represent non-cash support such as volunteer services, donated use of university or non-university equipment or facilities, or services of employees from non-university organizations. The PI's and department's responsibility is to obtain the in-kind certificates and provide them to the cost share accountant.
