Emily Nocito is a third year PhD student in Environmental Studies. Her research focuses on marine conservation of the high seas via international governance. Emily was recently awarded a Teaching Excellence Award based on her teaching philosophy and dedication to her students. We asked Emily a few questions to learn more about her as a teacher and get to know her better. Read more below!

What is your favorite part about teaching?

I love learning from my students. Each one brings their own perspectives, opinions, and stories to the table.

Is there a particular story from the classroom you would like to share?

In my first semester of teaching at CU, a student and I worked together on their paper, exploring different philosophies on environmental feminism. That student is now a rising senior, with their capstone focus on environmental feminism. It's amazing to see a short paper from the course become a subject that they are immensely passionate about.

Do you have any recommendations for continuing or increasing student advocacy and engagement?

Don't be afraid to put a new spin on an old topic! I find students engage most during topics they are passionate about, so meet them halfway. Adapt your materials to be interesting and relevant, while still hitting the learning objectives.

I was once interviewed by the BBC on Doctor Who fandom

What is a good book you have read recently and why did you enjoy it?

I just finished reading The Witches: Salem, 1692 by Stacy Schiff. It is a definitive history of the Salem Witch Trials, something I have always been interested in.

If you could have dinner with anyone (living or dead), who would it be and why?

Tomas Kalnoky. He is the frontman for my favorite band, as well an amazing solo artist. I'd just ask him to serenade me the whole time.
