Melanie has a new book out, The Biology Adventurers: On the River. On the River is a spin-off of her best selling book, Biology Everywhere and is for elementary aged children. On the River was Melanie's Writer in Residence project as part of her residency with the High Plains Library District Foundation.

In On the River we follow the journey of brother and sister duo, Max and Ellie, as they try to determine if their local river is healthy. Ellie wants to earn her Biology Adventurer River Badge with her brother Max. But Max doesn’t think he’s any good at science. Can Max overcome his nerves and earn his adventurer badge, too?

Melanie published 'Biology Everywhere: How the Science of Life Matters to Everday Life' in 2020 with classroom teachers and the general public in mind. The book addresses how biology appears in, and impacts, every person's daily living, and how issues rooted in biology affect home life, work life, schools, health, arts, the environment while interacting with other scientific fields of study. She states "A working knowledge of biology is increasingly critical as we as a society grapple with big questions regarding topics such as ethics and regulation of genetic technology, conservation, and health. This book is intended to bridge the gap between traditional biology classes and the practical biology knowledge needed in the real world. In each chapter, a different biological concept is examined and related to some real-world issue or experience in an effort to demonstrate why the science of life matters to your everyday experience."

She wrote for The Public Library of Science (PLOS), a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization founded to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication.
