CUPD is investigating a vehicle theft and an attempted vehicle theft at Williams Village. Police received a report of a white 2016 Hyundai Tucson stolen from lot 622 at Williams Village at approximately 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, followed by a report of an attempted theft of a white Kia Forte in the same lot at approximately 8:45 p.m. Dec. 10. Police believe the incidents are connected. No one was injured and police do not believe there is a threat to life or safety. Police do not have a suspect description at this time.

On behalf of the entire CU ��Ƶ Police Department, I would like to express my sincere sympathy to the families of the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks and the millions of lives impacted since that day. Twenty years have passed, but time does not heal all wounds, and grief lives in our hearts. Your loved ones will never be forgotten.

I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to the first responders who rushed into danger that awful day, in New York, Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon. It’s a calling to be in this profession—to be part of something bigger than ourselves. Many of those first responders gave their lives to help others, and their efforts will never be forgotten.

On that day, I was attending a police training in Denver, and had been an officer for just three years. I watched in horror along with the rest of the world as first responders put aside their fear and ran toward danger with one goal: to help save lives. Our training turned into a gathering of law enforcement officials watching these selfless acts unfold as the towers collapsed. Their bravery will never be forgotten.

Law enforcement officers and first responders understand the risks and rely on the support of our families and community members as we head to work each day. Many of the brave men and women who responded to the attacks on our nation on 9/11 didn’t get to return home. They didn’t have a chance to say goodbye. Their selfless acts of heroism will never be forgotten.

We salute them today, and every day, as we follow in their footsteps to serve and protect.

To the CU ��Ƶ community:

On March 31, 2021, at approximately 2:30 p.m., the CU ��Ƶ Police Department (CUPD) was notified of burglary inside the CU ��Ƶ Rec Center, 1855 Pleasant Street. The suspect entered the facility by providing false information to staff and then stole or ransacked multiple backpacks from hallway cubbies and took credit cards and cash from the backpacks. One of the credit cards was used to purchase more than $400 in Visa gift cards at a local convenience store. The suspect is believed to be involved in a similar case at the Rec Center on March 29, 2021, that was reported through our online system.

The suspect was perceived to be:

6’2”-6’4”
250-280 pounds
Short hair, possibly gray or light-colored
Tattoo on right calf
Wearing blue shorts and a Reebok sweatshirt
Had a cane on March 29, but not on March 31
Green and white buff
Tan ballcap

To our campus community,

Ever since Monday’s tragic events at the King Soopers at Table Mesa and Broadway, we have received an outpouring of support and concern from across our CU ��Ƶ campus and the country. We can never express to you how much that means to all of the members of our department. As messages are sent to me, I am sharing those with our CUPD staff.

It takes a special type of person to willingly wear the uniform or work in a professional staff position for any law enforcement agency. Every police officer knows when they say goodbye to their loved ones before going to work each day that it could be the last time that they are together. Yet, our officers come to work, put on that uniform, and proudly serve and protect our community. It is not a job; it is a calling.

Our hearts are truly broken for the family and friends of Officer Eric Talley, who answered that calling and gave his life to protect the community, and of all of the innocent victims.

The ��Ƶ Police Department is a full-service police department, and that service starts when you call 911. In fact, CU ��Ƶ is one of four ��Ƶ County agencies staffing their own dispatch center.

When you call 911 from a campus landline phone, you will be automatically connected with the CUPD dispatch center. If you call from a cell phone, your call will be answered by the city of ��Ƶ dispatch center. If you have a medical emergency, they will take your call and send medical assistance. If you have any other needs they will transfer you to the CUPD dispatch center right away.

Our dispatchers are a vital link between our community and our public safety services. Every year, the CUPD communications center answers more than 25,000 phone calls through 911 and the non-emergency phone number. They take calls about campus parking complaints, open door requests, thefts, vandalism, threats, assaults, trespasses, suspicious persons, vehicles or objects, and requests for general information. The dispatchers are also responsible for logging all calls for service for police and fire in the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system and then broadcasting that information to the officers on the streets. They are the unseen partner of the emergency responder providing them with needed information and support while sitting in a small room in front of a bank of computer screens.

To the CU ��Ƶ Community:

On Sunday, Feb. 14, 2021, at approximately 3 a.m., the CU ��Ƶ Police Department (CUPD) was notified of a possible burglary in the Newton Court apartments. The victims reported that someone entered their apartment between 1:30 and 3 a.m. through an unlocked sliding patio door. One person was in the apartment when the burglary occurred, but did not have contact with the suspect and was not aware of the incident until later. During the course of the investigation, officers discovered that this was the second time that someone had entered this apartment and taken items. A previous burglary occurred on Jan. 8, 2021. That incident had not been previously reported.

Several identification items were taken this morning, including a passport, student visa, clothes, shoes, and a wallet with a driver’s license and debit and credit cards. A large hiking backpack was also taken. The suspect appears to have left behind some of their own clothing items. Officers followed bike tracks in the snow leading away from the apartment until they led to a plowed parking lot and the trail ended.

CUPD is currently investigating the incident. There is no physical description of the suspect. Anyone with information regarding this crime is encouraged to contact CUPD at (303) 492-6666. On Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021, at approximately 1:45 p.m., the CU ��Ƶ Police Department (CUPD) was notified of a possible stabbing that the ��Ƶ Police Department (BPD) was investigating in the area of the Andrews Arboretum just south of Broadway and Marine Street. The victim reported that the incident took place in the wooded area along the bike path that traverses down the hill from Main Campus. At this time, BPD is still gathering suspect information.

The ��Ƶ Police Department is currently investigating the incident. Please avoid the area. Anyone with information regarding this crime is encouraged to contact BPD at (303) 441-3333. We are on one of the most beautiful campuses in America. It is also a very safe campus with property theft (bikes, computers, backpacks, etc.) as our most reported crime. As we get ready to return to campus in just about a month, here are some steps to help you stay safe on campus or anywhere you are.

Use a u-lock style bike lock and take your lock through the front tire and around your frame when locking it to the bike rack.
Register your bike through the campus registration system.
Never leave your valuable out in the open.
Register your electronic devices through the Office of Information Technology.
Always use the buddy system when walking or going for a run.
Be an effective bystander. Don’t ignore situations that seem problematic or indicators that someone is trying to take advantage of a person who may be vulnerable.
When walking, get your head off of your phone and be aware of your surroundings.
Close and lock your doors and windows to help prevent burglaries and assaults.
All residence hall residents should be conscientious about any strangers trying to enter buildings without an escort or by "tailgating" behind someone who unlocked the door.
Doors leading to living areas in residence halls remain locked 24 hours a day and visitors must be escorted by a hall resident. Do not prop open doors.
In case of emergency, make sure you get the message. As a CU ��Ƶ student you are automatically registered using your @colorado.edu email address once you become an active student. Please update your mobile number as needed in your MyCUInfo portal.
