Barbara (Bobbi) Barrow has been named to the position of executive director of institutional relations at the University of Colorado at ÐßÐßÊÓƵ, pending approval by the CU Board of Regents, according to an announcement by Chancellor Richard L. Byyny. The executive director will be charged with responsibility for evaluating, reorganizing and streamlining the communications programs serving the campus, Byyny said, as well as for finding opportunities for consolidation that will lead to efficiency, continuity and cost containment.

Sixteen graduating law students at the University of Colorado at ÐßÐßÊÓƵ have been selected as members of the honorary Order of the Coif for high academic achievement throughout their law school careers. The students represent the top 10 percent of 1996-97 graduates from the CU School of Law. The law school graduated 167 students in May and recognized the top 15 percent of students from the December and May graduating classes at the May commencement. Students in the top 10 percent were selected in late June for the 1997 Order of the Coif.

High school students from the statewide program Youth in Natural Resources will participate in a variety of seminars and hands-on activities at the CU-ÐßÐßÊÓƵ Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory on July 16 from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Hands-on lab experiments will expose students from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds to opportunities in natural resources, the importance of environmental issues and the benefits of higher education. Students will conduct experiments with ITLLÂ’s interactive exhibits on topics like fluid dynamics, chaos theory and weather.

A memorial service for Walter S. “Wally” Collins, professor emeritus of music and a former associate dean of the College of Music at the University of Colorado at ÐßÐßÊÓƵ, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 12, in Grusin Music Hall. A reception in the new student lounge will follow the service. Collins died June 30 of a brain aneurysm in Hyannis Port, Mass., while vacationing in Cape Cod. He was 71.

Twenty-three cases stemming from the May 3-5 University Hill riots have been or are being reviewed by the Office of Judicial Affairs at the University of Colorado at ÐßÐßÊÓƵ, according to Andrea Goldblum, director of judicial affairs. As of July 1, the Judicial Affairs Office reported the status of the 23 cases as follows: • Four suspensions, each for one year, which do not remain permanently on the studentsÂ’ records • One expulsion, which remains a permanent part of the studentÂ’s record

Photonics – lasers, sensors and optics – are present in computers, microwave ovens, telephones, clock radios and cars. Another little known fact is that Colorado is becoming a hub of photonic manufacturing. • DenverÂ’s Lockheed Martin uses the technology in its Titan II expendable launch system. • ÐßÐßÊÓƵ’s Lexmark International uses it in inkjet and laser printers.

PROGRAMÂ’S Ph.D. RANKS NO. 1 The University of Colorado at ÐßÐßÊÓƵ Graduate School of Business Administration was recently ranked No. 1 in doctoral entrepreneurship education at the 42nd World Conference of the International Council of Small Businesses in San Francisco. The entrepreneurship doctoral program out-ranked competing schools such as Harvard, Purdue, Northwestern, University of Georgia, University of South Carolina, Wharton, Michigan, University of North Carolina and Texas A&M.

A group of space scientists and students will gather at CU-ÐßÐßÊÓƵ’s Space Technology Building in the CU Research Park the evening of July 4 to see the first images of Mars beamed back to Earth by NASAÂ’s Mars Pathfinder landing craft.

Professor John Falconer of the chemical engineering department at the University of Colorado at ÐßÐßÊÓƵ has received two awards for outstanding teaching skills and for his dedication in motivating students to get the most out of their learning experiences.
